Neurotoxins
Botox is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. It is made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with more than 6 million Botox treatments administered each year. People also use Botox to treat excessive sweating, migraines, muscular disorders, and some bladder and bowel disorders.
Wrinkles aren’t your style and the “frozen look” isn’t either. For adults who want a natural look, there’s Dysport, a prescription injection proven to help smooth the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Untreated muscles still work normally, so you can continue to express feelings naturally. It’s the lines that are minimized, not your expressions.
Jeuveau, also known as NEWTOX is another purified form of botulinum toxin that has been shown to deliver temporary improvement in moderate to severe frown lines by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity, temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines and reducing the appearance of movement lines. Jeuveau is another excellent, non-surgical option that reduces the effects of aging and helps regain a more youthful appearance.
Xeomin® has now been approved for some cosmetic indications – Moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Now that Xeomin® is available and FDA approved, doctors can use it to treat the same facial lines treated by Botox® and Dysport®, including frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. Xeomin® is the first one that does not need to be refrigerated before use, which may simplify distribution. Xeomin® is also has no additives, just botulinum toxin type A. This may mean that there is less risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin® than other available neurotoxins. The effects of Xeomin® occur within one week, and the results last from three to six months, making it comparable to Botox in terms of both onset and duration of action.
